The weather on August 4 looked promising throughout the day for the herd of eager beer drinkers waiting in line to purchase tickets to sample unlimited suds and food at Lowry Park Zoo. Mother Nature had other plans, as a thunderstorm moved in just before the event opened its gates at 7:30 p.m., knocking out power to the entire zoo. Luckily, there was beer.

“Suitcase City,” as many call it, or the area to the west of the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida (USF) Tampa campus and just south of Tampa Palms, is not the area most would imagine would have a great amount of economic opportunity. However, imagine what would happen if the area were to be revitalized and redeveloped, with economic opportunities and jobs for the area’s unemployed. This is the vision of District 2 (which includes all of New Tampa) Hillsborough County Commissioner Victor Crist — what he is calling an “Innovation Destination.”

Simon Property Group has announced plans to open an outlet mall similar to the Ellenton Prime Outlets, with a Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th outlet store as one of its staples. But, that won’t be the only store bringing jobs to the area.

According to the PCSO report, Tampa resident and barber William Stevenson Bateman, 59, of 4720 El Dorado Dr., broke into Nirfa’s Salon around 12:30 a.m. on June 16, using a hammer to break the glass front door. Once inside, he stole a cash box containing an undisclosed amount of money.
