New Tampa residents were stunned to see the closing of Lee Roy Selmon’s on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., one of the more popular restaurants and bars in the New Tampa area.

Traffic on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. can sometimes feel like it’s at a standstill during the busy commuting hours in the early morning or afternoon. However, this morning, August 30, traffic actually stood still after an accident knocked down power lines and closed all four lanes of the busy road.

Beginning this afternoon and into the evening, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel will begin to feel the effects of Tropical Storm Isaac as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico. Due to the strong winds, rain and storm surge that the storm will bring, a tropical storm warning has been issued for our area and Hillsborough County schools will be closed on Monday.

With Tropical Storm Isaac bearing down on the Caribbean islands, all eyes are on the storm’s projected path, which currently leads it on a collision course with Florida, and could affect whether or not New Tampa and Wesley Chapel schools will be open Monday.

The world is getting warmer, but is the climate changing? Is it mankind’s fault? Do we have enough fresh water to keep using at the rate that we do? How high will sea level reach in 100 years? Most people would just shrug their shoulders, but the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Florida Water Science Center is set on finding the answers to these questions, many of which could be discovered through research being done at the Center’s new headquarters in Wesley Chapel.

Rain continues across Tampa Bay today, and considering the amount of rain the area has seen over past several days, it’s pretty saturated out there. For this reason, a flood watch has been issued for Hillsborough County.

There is no freedom in sight for Jared Cano, who is accused of attempting to build and discharge a bomb at New Tampa’s Freedom High School, after a Hillsborough County judge upheld the charges against him on August 20.

Just weeks after being released, controversy has erupted over Florida’s elementary and middle school grades. Several districts, including Hillsbor- ough, have schools that should have scored higher. Luckily for New Tampa, nine of the ten elementary and middle schools in our area can’t score any higher — they each already scored an “A” and no New Tampa-based public elementary or middle school scored lower than a “B.”

Since it opened in 2008, the New Tampa Recreation Center has been an incredibly popular destination for the youth of the New Tampa and nearby communities. The city is currently in the design phase of adding an additional 14,000 sq. ft. that will provide more gymnasium space, more locker rooms, multi-purpose rooms, fitness and wellness spaces and, most important, more storage.

One color guard group, lead by a Meadow Pointe resident, carries not only Old Glory, but also hope and inspiration for wounded vets and amputees, alike.

According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), 29-year-old Kevin Ellison has been charged with multiple felonies, including several counts of kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and robbery/ home invasion. Detectives say they do not believe that Ellison’s actions were random acts of violence.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, just before midnight on July 20, Benjamin Lee Powell, 25, was arrested and charged with second degree murder in the July 19 stabbing death of 18-year-old Grant Woodham in the Pebble Creek community of New Tampa, where Powell also is a resident.

If construction continues at its current pace, the so-called New Tampa Gateway Bridge could be completed by the end of the calendar year. The $12.4-million, 0.7-mile bridge project that will connect Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms to New Tampa Blvd. in West Meadows is on track for a December completion, almost six months ahead of the original contracted end date of May 2013.
